UPDATE: New Charge For Man Who Shot His Pregnant Wife

Mebane, NC-- On Saturday, October 4, 2008 around 3:14 am Mebane Police investigators responded to 1426 Birkdale Circle on a shooting.

When officers arrived they found a female lying on the bed in the master bedroom with a gunshot to the abdomen. She was life flighted to Duke Medical Center. Police say the woman was 27 weeks pregnant and delivered the baby at the hospital.

Investigators say early in the investigation they believed that the shooting was accidental. But, information and evidence that they gathered has now lead to them believe it was an attempted murder.

On Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at approximately 4:27 p.m. members of the Mebane Police Department executed a search warrant were the shooting happened. Police then filed warrants to arrest Robert Thompson Broom, the victim's husband.

Just after Midnight on Wednesday, October 08, 2008 officers located Broom traveling west on I40/85 at which time a traffic stop was initiated and Broom was taken into custody without incident. They got help from the Alamance County Sheriffs Office and the Graham Police Department.


Robert Thompson Broom is charged with:

  • One (1) Count - Attempted 1st Degree Murder
  • One (1) Count - AWDWIKISI (Assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury)

Broom was placed in the Alamance County Jail in lieu of no bond, based upon the crime being domestic related. He had his first court appearance Wednesday. He is still at the Alamance County jail under a $800,000.00 bond.

UPDATE: An additional investigation released information showing Broom unlawfully confined his wife and failed/refused to render aid or call for medical attention after the shooting.

Additional charges:

  • One (1) Count - First Degree Kidnapping

The baby was delivered in the hospital and is in stable condition. The victim is listed in serious but stable condition.
