December Bringing New And Tougher Laws In NC

Raleigh, NC-- It's been months since lawmakers and legislators wrap up the 2008 General Assembly session in North Carolina but hey were able to pass or toughen 25 laws before recessing.

A few of the new or changed laws are:

  • It will now be a felony for any person or persons who commit vandalism that results in $5,000 of damage or more. This will involve damage to churches, houses, fences or walls.
  • Individuals who knowingly violate a Domestic protective order twice will be charged with a felony.
  • Schools and day cares are required to get email alerts from the sex offender registry. This will let them know when a registered sex offender is living near campus.
  • The Jesscia Lunsford Act now has 22 new sections that spells out the changes and tighter laws for sex offenders.
  • Laws for persons who violate their probation are changed to make it easier on courts to modify or extend it.
  • Hospitals are now required to report serious, non-accidental trauma injuries involving children to law enforcement officials.
  • Fines and penalities for burning a cross or hanging a noose in any public place is increased.
  • The criminal offense of stalking has been defined and expanded.
  • People who want to operate a Massage and Bodywork Therapy business now has to go through a criminal background check as well as their employees.
  • Anyone who wants to own/operate nursing home(s) has to go through a criminal background check.
