Winston-Salem, NC -- Students at Atkins High School are learning about money, and possible career alternatives, all because of the opening of a student run credit union.

The Atkins Allegacy Credit Union is located in the school's cafeteria, and is open three days a week. The school already has 60 student members that can deposit or take out money as needed. School leaders say it helps students learn financial literacy and responsibility.

Atkins High junior David Grisgraber says the credit union teaches one important concept, saving. "Once you get out of college, there's not many jobs that are out there and you're gonna need that backup money that you saved when you where in high school and in middle school and even all the way back to, that your grandparents set aside for you, you're gonna need that in the future because as jobs dwindle and dwindle, you know, you're gonna need a backup plan."

Nine student-volunteers work in the office. It gives them real-life work experience, financial study, and marketing credit.
