Greensboro, NC -- North Carolina A&T State University students who live off campus are put pressure on local law enforcement to beef up security and they say, so far, it's worked.
"When I get here I do see a lot of cops. Especially during the weekend between Thursdays and Sundays. I do see a lot more police around," said Amber Icinao, a NC A&T student.
Sebastian Village resident, Courtney Ward, agrees, "I actually have seen the security go up. There have been more officer patrols going around. They've actually put up a couple of surveillance cameras and I've seen the cops come out a lot faster."
This comes after numerous incidents where students living off campus fell victim to crime.
Students at the "Stop the Violence" rally say the incident that sparked the most controversy was the murder of 22 year old Dennis Hayle.
Hayle was shot inside his apartment at Campus Courtyard, an off campus living facility for students. As of now, Greensboro Police still have no leads.
But students say the rally isn't just for the Hayle murder case. They want the rally to bring community awareness to the off-campus violence problem as a whole, but most of all, want to raise awareness among their peers.
"I think more so people getting involved. Knowing what's going on. Taking safety precautions themselves. Being smart about what they do. And also, if you see something that looks kind of mysterious and doesn't look right, just reporting it, instead of just looking over it and just thinking that it's nothing," said Ward.
Police at the rally continued to press the same issue. They advise anyone who sees anything out of the ordinary to give police a call right away.
