Winston-Salem, NC -- Vice President Joe Biden's speech to Wake Forest University grads was just the latest in a long connection between the university and presidential politics.

In 1951, President Harry Truman came to Winston-Salem and was part of the groundbreaking ceremony on the new campus of Wake Forest College. This marked the first time that a president had been to the area since George Washington in 1791.

The campus was back in the national spotlight in 1988 when vice president George Bush and Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis held a presidential debate in Wait Chapel.

In 2000, Wait Chapel and Wake Forest was again in the nation's eyes when Texas governor George W. Bush and vice president al gore took the stage for another presidential debate.

The campus was again popular during the most recent presidential campaign. John McCain gave a speech at Wait Chapel. Hilary Clinton also appeared at another event with Maya Angelou and Joe Biden came as a Vice Presidential candidate.
