Wilkesboro, NC -- Parts of Wilkesboro were flooded early Tuesday morning.
The water started rising around 6 a.m. at Wilkes Community College, according to Frank Shuford, associate vice president of facility services.
He said his staff tried to prevent the water from coming into the administration building by putting panels in front of the glass entrance. The water rose 18 inches at the doors, he said. Two inches crept inside the building despite workers using squeegees, mops and vacuums.
A crew of about 40 people helped clean up the mud and water and removed ruined carpet.
Outside, Wilkesboro city crews helped removed a layer of mud covering the parking lot and lawn. The high-level mark was visible several feet high on a utility building.
The school will operate on a normal schedule Wednesday, though recreation in areas affected by the flooding will be cancelled the rest of the week.
Two Wilkesboro parks were damaged, including School Street Park near the community college, and Cub Creek Park near downtown.
Cliff Gardner, the town's park supervisor, said it will likely take several hundred dollars to repair damage.
Ball fields were under water, but the park's walking trails were most severely damage.
He said it could have been worse. Two months ago, the town town finished a stream restoration project on about 3,000 feet of Cub Creek. One of the goal's of the project was to reduce flooding. Gardner said it seemed to work.
