Greensboro, N.C. - A student from Gibsonville Elementary has a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu. Guilford County School officials say that the student is at home and not attending school.

According to a release sent by the district, school leaders have taken precautionary measures, including sanitizing and cleaning all surfaces in the school. All those that came in contact with the infected student are being treated with anti-viral medication.

In addition, the Alamance County health department has reported 5 new confirmed cases of the virus today. Four of the five cases are school students.

Three of the new cases are children of the patient that was confirmed to have the virus on Tuesday. Two of those children attend Blessed Sacrament School in Burlington. The sick children have also been in contact with family that attend Eastlawn Elementary.

The other two new cases today are students at R. Homer Andrews Elementary in Burlington. Parents at this school have been notified by the school system. Summer school classes at Andrews Elementary have been moved to another school.

All of the children confirmed today have been isolated and have begun anti-viral treatment.

Today's new cases bring the total in the Piedmont up to 13.

Health officials encourage everyone to practice good personal hygiene, which includes thorough hand washing, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and coughing/sneezing into a tissue or bended elbow. The health department also strongly recommends that individuals stay at home when sick and stay away from others.
