Greensboro, NC -- To keep Greensboro's urban loop moving forward to completion, city leaders want to put up local money.
The next section of the urban loop from U.S. 70 to U.S. 29 was scheduled for right-of way acquisition this year with construction beginning in 2011.
But NC DOT division engineers say state budget constraints have those plans under review.
The remaining sections from U.S. 29 to Bryan Boulevard are currently unfunded at this time.
Steering through the broken economy is tough on any business.
B&H Fabrics sits just off of Highway 29 in Browns Summit.
The company is counting on some relief.
Managers see it coming in the form of the completion of the urban loop
City leaders say their $30 million loan to the state won't be enough to build the road, but it may be what the project needs.
"What we would be doing is getting out in front and basically helping the state keep the process moving along. What you don't want is you don't want our belt loop to stagnate," explained Councilman Robbie Perkins.
Perkins is Chairman of the Metropolitan Planning Organization.
He will meet with state transportation officials in raleigh thursday to discuss the loan idea.
He says they may accept it or have some other idea for the loop.
Perkins explained the $30 million comes from voter approved bonds that the city already has the authority to issue.
The bonds are very specific and have to be used for transportation.
