Norman, Oklahoma -- Authorities have recovered the body of North Carolina man who drowned in Lake Thunderbird.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Danny Proctor says authorities received calls about the drowning about 8:45 p.m. Sunday. It happened near the Calypso Cove section of the lake. The man has not been identified, but officials say he is from North Carolina.

Proctor says friends of the man tried to save him but failed. Crews recovered the man's body about 8:25 a.m. Monday, about 60 yards from the shore in about 81/2 feet of water.

The man is one of five people to drown in an Oklahoma lake during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Two of those drownings occurred in Lake Thunderbird.
