Winston-Salem, NC -- Winston-Salem Police say a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was hit and killed when he swerved in front of a car.
Just after 3:00am on Sunday, Angelica Rincon of Asheboro was travelling southbound on US 311 near Union Cross Road when Mark Daniel Zanzarella swerved in front of her. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say he was riding a pink 20 inch girls "Next Slumber Party" bicycle. One of his friends, Justin Bennett, said he saw him leaving his home around 11:00pm. "I was wondering where he was going. I was like, 'Mark, where are you going?' and he wouldn't answer me," said Bennett.
His mother, Earlene Jones, told WFMY News 2's Ashley Smith that he had stolen his little sister's bicycle to meet a girl he met on MySpace. Jones said her son was going from Clemmons, where they live, to High Point.
"He had met this girl on myspace and he had only known her for a day. And I told Mark, don't do it. Don't do something you are going to regret and then this happens," said Dillon Patton, another one of Zanzarella's friends.
Family and friends are shocked by what happened. They say this was out of character for Zanzarella. " He was a beautiful, wonderful young man. He was very polite, always welcome in my house and he is going to be truly missed," said Randy Patton, a family friend.
Police say neither speed nor alcohol were a factor. There is no word on if charges will be filed. Zanzarella's mother, Earlene Jones did say she doesn't blame the driver that collided with her son.
Investigators are looking for the driver of a red pickup truck who stopped to help. They believe the driver was a witness, but was not involved in the crash.
This is Winston-Salem's 14th traffic fatality as compared to six for the same time period last year.
