Greensboro, NC -- Kids at one Greensboro elementary school looked across the street today and saw fire.
Fortunately, the fire was part of a controlled burn conducted by the Piedmont Land Conservancy. Kevin Redding, Executive Director of the Piedmont Land Conservancy says, "Burning is really good. It eliminates some of the invasive plants and it helps the natural ones and actually gives them a boost so they can out compete the invasive plants."
The burn began around noon. Conservancy employees talked to the students about fire safety, and how fire can be good when it comes to vegetation. The burn gave the students an outdoor classroom.
Ken Bridle, Stewardship Director for the Piedmont Land Conservancy says, "Those students will be able to watch this turn from a burned blackened area into a really much more bio diverse and species rich habitat."
Students watched from a safe distance across the street and had the opportunity to ask questions of conservancy employees.
