Trinity, NC - Students in one Triad community will re-live the first day of school all over again. Wheatmore High School in Randolph County opens this morning. Up until last week, those students shared the same space at Trinity High School. Fourteen hundred students squeezed into one school, built large enough for only 850. The area's growing population led Randolph County School leaders to build the new school. Students learned in 24 trailers at Trinity High school at the start of the school year as crews worked to finish Wheatmore High. Back to back construction delays pushed back the original move-in date three weeks. Today the school finally opens but with mixed emotions. "I'm kind of upset that me and some of my friends are going to be split up, but I'm kind of looking forward to going to a new campus and starting new traditions," said Emmie Grantham, a Wheatmore High School sophomore. "Trinity, it's always been known as one of the most unified communities in the area and the split is really dividing it up and it's disappointing," said Kenny Collishaw, a Trinity High School senior.
The new school solves the overcrowding issues and also gives the necessary room needed to continue to accommodate its student population.
It also comes with plenty of new features. The state-of-the art school is equipped with the most up to date technology available. There are computers in every room and smartboards come standard in every classroom.
When the more than 600 students report to the first day of class at 8:20 Monday morning, they'll attend an assembly and then spend the rest of the day getting used to their new surroundings.
