Caswell County, NC -- William Barber, the president of the state conference of the NAACP, said he wants answers into the shootings that left two Caswell County children injured earlier this month.
Barber said the case has "racial overtones." He said his organization will look at the initial charges, the bond amounts, and the fact that Fuqua is no longer in jail.
He said he hopes to push a federal investigation into the case.
The NAACP got involved at the request of the victim's parents.
TIMELINE:
- John Fuqua, 52, was arrested Sept. 5 in connection to the shootings, which reportedly happended at his Brown Road house in Leasburg.
- A man, who is black, said right before the shootings Fuqua was arguing with him, yelled racial slurs, and asked his wife to get his gun.
- After the man left Fuqua's house, three kids reportedly walked by and two were shot.
- A magistrate set Fuqua's bond at $5,000.He was released, but brought into custody again when the judge raised the bond to $130,000, and then again to $140,000.
- Fuqua was released last week, Caswell County Sheriff Michael Welch said.
Parents Discuss Need For NAACP's Help
"Whenever I try to talk to her about what happened, she starts crying immediately, so I try not to talk to her about it," said Natalie Walters, a victim's mother.
She and her husband, Kenneth Walters, said they do want to talk about the shooting that they say left a pellet in their daughter Mykiah's head, and a pellet in her cousin, Treivon Watkins', arm.
"We're definitely not trying to say we're prejudice or anything, we just want justice served and I feel like things are not moving fast enough," Natalie Walters said.
"We are officially opening an investigation into the shooting," Barber said at a press conference at Providence Missionary Baptist church Wednesday afternoon.
Barber said his organization's investigation will include a push for the FBI to get involved. The NAACP plans to send a letter to the agency.
Caswell County Sheriff Michael Welch said the case is listed as a "suspected hate crime" on the incident report
"When you go get your gun, you've got anger in you for something and we have witnesses who say racial slurs were used," Natalie Walters said.
It's unknown if the alleged shooting was racially motivated or if Fuqua allegedly shot at the children intentionally.
"He knew he shot and he had to know something had happened, but he never once came down the road. The police had to go looking for him," Walters said.
"We want to find out what the extent of it is, what were the aggravators in this case, what were the motivations, what are the predispositions of the person who committed these crimes," Barber said.
NAACP lawyers plan to review the charges against Fuqua, and compare with similar cases.
WFMY News 2 has made repeated attempts to reach Fuqua, but none of the calls have been returned.
