Greensboro, NC -- Investigators continue their search for a driver that struck and killed a bicyclist on Saturday night.
David Sherman, 55, of Summerfield was struck and killed as he rode his bicycle on North Church Street near the intersection with Highway 150. He died from injuries sustained from the collison. Deputies say the driver did not stop.
Investigators say that the vehicle involved, a Silver Dodge Durango, should have heavy damage to the front bumper and windshield.
UPDATE: Deputies in Rockingham County and NC Highway Patrol seized a vehicle in Rockingham County that they received a tip about early this morning. The SUV matched the description of the one seen when Sherman was hit. Investigators with both agencies have been on the scene all day at a home on Moir Mill Rd.
Officers tell WFMY News 2 that charges are pending against a person of interest in the investigation. They don't expect charges or an arrest until tomorrow at the earliest.
Sherman's friend, Alison Falls, calls him a sweet man who was always smiling. She says he loved his family and talked of them often.
A group of Sherman's cyclist friends spoke with WFMY News 2 on Monday. They say he was a passionate cyclist who biked on local roads and particpated in statewide cycling events.
"He was just the best guy. He really had an enthusiasm for the sport of cycling that you just don't find," said Rodney Simpson. Robert Lippit said, "Whoever did this, if they could find it in themselves to turn themselves in and come forward, not that it's going to right the wrong that happened, but it would help the family move toward closure." Sherman leaves behind and wife and two grown children. He was also a violinist in the Greensboro Phil Harmonia. His funeral will be held Wednesday at 6:30 pm at New Garden Friends Meeting.
Anyone with information regarding the hit-and-run can call the North Carolina Highway Patrol at 334-5500.
