Greensboro, NC -- What started out as one Greensboro mother's breast cancer diagnosis, turned into a group's promise to help find a cure.

Kim Smir created the Bosom Buddy Brigade in honor of her friend Dona Lee, a breast cancer survivor. Smir along with 21 others raised $60,000 toward breast cancer research. With help from students at the Canterbury School, they raised an additional $1,300.

Though the group reached it's financial goal, educating the community is a top priority.

"This isn't something that just happens in October. We deal with this everyday. Women are diagnosed every three minutes. We had 22 women in our group and that means statistically three of us will be diagnosed with breast cancer. So this is not something we can stop fighting," said Smir.

It's a message they've already spread to their daughters and a goal  shared by all women affected by breast cancer.  "Early detection saves lives," said Lee.

The Bosom Buddy Brigade participated in at 2-day 40-mile walk in Charlotte last weekend where they donated the money they raised to support breast cancer research.
