The Honorable Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Nov. 11 at the Annual Luncheon of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

O'Connor canceled due to a family emergency. The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro say the will reschedule the event at a later date.

The event was to present its highest honor, the Thornton H. Brooks Leadership Award, to Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, the founder and CEO of Pace Communications in Greensboro, former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Finland and chair of the national American Red Cross.

Justice O'Connor and McElveen-Hunter are longtime friends.

The Thornton H. Brooks Leadership Award is named after one of the founders of The Community Foundation and recognizes an individual whose philanthropy style - one of generous, unheralded and quiet giving - resembles that of the late Brooks.
