Spartanburg, S.C. -- Elon's Brandon Newsome was recognized by the Southern Conference for his performance during the Phoenix's 42-17 victory over Western Carolina as he was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Newsome becomes the ninth SoCon weekly honoree for the football program this season, one shy of the team's record of 10 during the 2007 season. For the third straight week, Elon held steady at number six in both national polls.
Newsome, who hails from Windsor, Va., picked up his first career SoCon accolade after rushing for a career-high four touchdowns and 143 yards on 16 carries during sixth-ranked Elon's win at Western Carolina.
The 100-yard rushing game was the fifth of the junior's career and first of the season. Newsome found the end zone once in each quarter, scoring on runs of 26, 18, 35 and 13 yards.
He also caught one pass for 16 yards for a total of 159 yards of offense on the day.
