Greensboro, NC -- Greensboro's City Council meeting Tuesday night, deteriorated into a verbal sparring match over the White Street Landfill.
Council members rebuked each other and called their colleagues' comments insulting and offensive. All this, after a study found residents near the landfill have an elevated rate of cancer. But health officials say, there is no link between the two. Yet, on the council, there's a deep divide the landfill's future. Council Member Goldie Wells says more research needs to be done. "We still don't have enough evidence. We are going to still believe that the landfill is not good for us," Wells said. Council Member Zach Matheny stressed that there is no option on the table to reopen the landfill. But, Council Member T. Dianne Bellamy-Small, pointed out that the residents should have a chance to express their concerns. Council members eventually voted to facilitate a meeting between neighbors and experts on the health effects of landfills. The State Department of Environmental and Natural Resources is expected to conduct another study in the next several weeks.
