Mebane, NC -- A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was taken to UNC-Hospitals Monday morning after his car was hit from behind.

Trooper Humberto Reyna was sitting in his car at 8:10 when the vehicle was hit on I-85/40 westbound near Mebane Oaks Road (Exit 154) in Alamance County.

Sgt. T.D. Frye says Trooper Reyna was sitting in his vehicle waiting on a tow truck to respond to an earlier wreck, when a woman driving an SUV hydroplaned across 3 lanes. Frye said the driver was trying move to the left when she lost control and traveled to the right.

The woman, Marcella Crook, 38, of Durham, allegedly hit the rear of the trooper's car, a highway sign then Randy Barnes, 34, of Mebane.

Barnes said he was standing talking to the trooper when he was hit. Barnes' sons were involved in the wreck that Trooper Reyna originally responded to.

Crook, her three passengers, Barnes and Reyna all went to hospitals.

The three passengers in the SUV were ages 5, 13 and 15.

Sgt. Frye said Reyna has broken ribs and a concussion. He said Reyna will stay at UNC Hospitals overnight.

Crook is charged with Exceeding a Safe Speed and Unsafe Tires. She is not currently listed as a patient at Alamance Regional Medical Center, which is where she and her kids were taken for treatment.

WFMY News 2 was unable to reach Crook for comment Monday.

Barnes and his sons are recovering at home.

Randy Barnes' wife, Nadine, said she feels blessed, especially so close to Thanksgiving.

Randy said he spoke with Trooper Reyna at the hospital. He said Reyna, who is also a preacher, said a prayer for the Barnes family.
