Greensboro, NC-- Friday afternoon, the city of Greensboro City named its new chief of police. City Manager Rashad Young announced that Ken Miller is their choice for the next chief of the Greensboro Police Department. Miller is currently a senior deputy chief with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina.
The city said it would not be talking with the media Friday because of a scheduled news conference on Monday. Young did release this statement about the decision: "We conducted an extensive evaluation process over the past three months and Chief Miller's performance was outstanding. I am confident that Chief Miller will continue to raise the bar of professionalism and accountability in the GPD," Young says. "In Chief Miller, the City of Greensboro is gaining a leader who recognizes the value of strong and enduring partnerships with the community."
Miller has served with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for 21 years and in law enforcement for more than 25 years. He has experience in police investigations, tactical operations and neighborhood policing, and served 11 years in patrol in various ranks and commands. He also has extensive experience in policy and fiscal management. Miller's first day on the job for Greensboro will be September 1.
Sharon Hightower is a Greensboro resident who served on a panel of people who interviewed the finalists and offered feedback to the city.
"My overall impression was maybe that he would be a good fit for this community," she said. "He seemed really, really focused and intent on making the mission very, very clear about the police department's role in the community."
Doris Vincent also served on the panel. She said, "I liked his professionalism; I liked the idea that he had gone into some areas in Charlotte and made great changes."
"I think that our city will see a lot of changes in our police force," said Vincent.
Dwight Crotts, an Assistant Chief with the Greensboro Police Department, was named the interim a few weeks ago. He starts on Sunday.
Miller will be in Greensboro Monday to make a public comment.
