Greensboro, NC -- If you get a letter in the mail urging you to get a copy of your property deed, don't buy it.

A company in Washington D.C. called the National Deed Service mailed letters to homeowners all over the country.

The company offers to send you a copy of your deed for about $60.

But nearly anyone can get a copy of their deed from their county for less than $10.

Several elderly homeowners have reported the letter to Guilford County's Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen.

He's warning them not to send a dime.

"Quite frankly it makes me angry. I'm getting a lot of calls from people who are elderly on fixed incomes," Thigpen said.

The Guilford County Register of Deeds explains the cost for a certified deed on its webpage.
