Reidsville, NC -- When April Caldwell's family planned her 18th birthday party, they never imagined she wouldn't be there to enjoy it.
April was stabbed to death on Christmas Day. Her ex-boyfriend and father of her child, Juan Carlos Ramirez, is facing murder charges. But he's eluded police for more than four months. The family says he continues to call them.
They're doing everything they can for April's 19-month-old son David. To help keep her memory alive, they invited friends and relatives to celebrate April's birthday by her grave Thursday evening.
They sang the song and signed the card, but the birthday girl wasn't there to cut her cake.
"It was promised to April when she turned 18. She wanted a big birthday party," says her mother Anna.
That promise was made months ago, when April Dawn Caldwell was still alive, and planning a bright future with her son David.
"He's looking more like her everyday," says April's father Terry.
Now, David gives his grandparents a reason to go on.
"He gives his mom a kiss every morning and every night before bed. He'll kiss her picture," Terry says.
David's father is still on the run, and calling April's family.
"He's told us how he stabbed her, how he killed her," Terry says.
"He says he's not turning himself in," Anna says.
They say he always asks about his son.
"I'm just afraid if he isn't in Mexico that he's waiting on his last chance to take the baby and then he could go to Mexico. I think, if he's around, that's what he's waiting on is the baby," Anna says.
That means living not only in grief, but in fear, until their daughter's killer is found.
"I can picture it in my mind, what he did to her. I hope nobody else ever has to do this," Terry says.
Police say they have records of those phone calls, and believe they will catch their suspect.
If you have any information on Juan Carlos Ramirez, call Crime Stoppers at 373-1000.
