Undated -- Do you know the difference between a stew and a soup?
That definition could land one company in hot water.
Campbell Soup Co. recently launched a new line of "Chunky Fully Loaded" soups, promising "extreme amounts of meat" taking soup "to the next level."
One flavor "Chunky Fully Loaded Beef Stew" prompted one of Campbell's competitors to take the company to court.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, in addition to beef, a beef stew must contain 20 to 30 percent potatoes, eight to 14 percent carrots, and at least three percent peas.
It can't be too thick or too thin. The gravy shall not be lumpy, and the beef neither dry nor mushy.
Like a buttery rue simmering on a pot, the stew debate thickens.
Hormel Foods claims Campbell is "misrepresenting the nature, characteristics, ingredients, benefits, and qualities of the fully loaded soup line."
It will be in the hands of the courts to decide whether or not to keep this controversy from boiling over.
