Greensboro, NC -- Greensboro police credit a group of North Carolina A&T students with stopping a possible sexual assault.
According to police the students heard a woman screaming just after midnight. When they investigated, they found a man attempting to assault a 17-year-old. Police say the students then chased the attacker away.
The A & T campus community is calling the two students heroes after they answered that cry for help.
The young men say they were visiting friends at Bennet College when they heard the screams coming from a block away. Damien Cash and Derrick Gardner ran to help. They say they were shocked to see a man on top of a teenaged girl near the railroad tracks. As soon as they got to the girl, they say the attacker jumped up and ran away. Cash chased the man while Gardner called 911.
"I think God just put us in the right place to help this young lady out in her time of need," Cash said.
Gardner agreed. "I don't feel like a hero. I think we were just doing what we felt was right thing to do." Cash called their actions as "just fellow Aggies trying to help out." University leaders call the two students' reactions heroic. They say they're proud of the young men because many times people pass by and don't stop to be concerned.
Investigators are still trying to locate the attacker.
The man is described as a black male in his late 20s, 5'7" and last seen wearing a brown camouflage jacket.
Officers say they are continuing their investigation.
The victim's mother told us she's grateful for the two students who came to her daughter's rescue.
She says her daughter is physically okay but emotionally strained.
