Caswell County, NC -- Thrust to the forefront of an FBI terrorism case, one community is still trying to understand what happened.
"I just can't believe this is going on right now, it's just, it's crazy," says Taylor Kirby, who grew up in Yanceyville.
A grand jury indicted seven North Carolina men on terrorism related charges. Investigators say they were preparing to "die... as martyrs in furtherance of violent jihad."
The FBI says some of them trained on private property in Caswell County, but they won't say where. In an indictment prosecutors accuse three of the men of training on weapons and military tactics in the county as recently as this month.
Bicycle shop owner Susan Merritt wonders how no one noticed. "You think that everybody is down home and comfortable, and it wouldn't happen in this far away of a community," she says.
Sheriff's deputies aided investigators in the county. But the feds are so tight-lipped, they wouldn't let the sheriff talk about how. The men are each charged with conspiracy to murder, kidnap, and injure persons abroad. They're also charged with charged with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. If convicted, the defendants could face life in prison. While Caswell County residents insist word gets around fast in their community, they do acknowledge their wide open spaces offer places to hide. "There's a lot of just acres and acres of lands and fields where no one really knows about, except for the people that own it," says Kirby.
