High Point, NC -- A birthday party for a two-year-old boy turned tragic when police say a reckless driver ran over the birthday boy.
High Point Police say Maurice Belser was driving "in a careless and reckless manner" on Amos Street Saturday night. At the same time, a crowd was gathered in the road and yard of a home in the 600 block.
Police say Belser continued to accelerate without regard for the people in the street. As a result, he hit the two-year-old, Andre Wright, who's birthday was being celebrated.
Belser told WFMY News 2's Ashley Smith he was not driving carelessly or recklessly. He was just heading home when the accident happened, "There was just cars. All the cars were on this side [of the street], so I couldn't see when I was turning the corner."
A teenager who was at the party said the two-year-old was running out in the street chasing after a balloon when he was hit by the car.
The child was transported to High Point Regional Hospital and later taken to Baptist Hospital. He suffered severe head injuries from the crash. He is now listed in good condition at Baptist.
Andre Wright's family said he suffered a fracture to his skull and received three stitches. They expect him home in the next few days.
Belser was charged with careless and reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was placed in Guilford County Jail-High Point under $30,000 bond. He posted bond overnight and has since been released.
