London, England -- British police say a teenager has been charged over hoax calls to Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Hotline.

London's Metropolitan Police says a 17-year-old boy from Birmingham in central England has been charged with conspiracy to cause a public nuisance and an offense under the Computer Misuse Act.

He appeared in court Saturday. A second suspect, aged 16, has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The arrests came after a hacktivist group posted online what appeared to be recordings of calls to the hotline and claimed responsibility on Twitter for "terrorizing" the anti-terrorist unit.

The police force said its communications systems had not been breached.

The hotline is provided for the public to report suspicions of terrorist activity.
