JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military says it has shot and wounded a Syrian man trying to enter the Golan Heights, after several Syrians tried to enter the Israel-occupied region over the past few weeks.
A military spokeswoman, Lt. Col Avital Leibovich, says the man was spotted trying to cut through the border fence on Saturday, and that an Israeli soldier fired warning shots in the air before firing at the man's knee. She says a group of Syrians evacuated him.
She says the military does not consider the man a refugee fleeing Syrian violence. She said Israel's political leaders are the ones responsible for deciding whether or not to treat attempted Syrian infiltrators as refugees. Others men tried to enter the Golan over the past few weeks disguised as shepherds, she added.
