San Jose, CA -- Authorities say three people are dead and three others injured following a late night fire in a San Jose apartment building.
Capt. Mary Gutierrez of the city fire department says a police officer was injured rescuing someone.
She tells The Associated Press that the fire started shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, and when crews reached the scene they found some people trapped in the burning apartment on the second floor of the building.
Gutierrez says the bodies of a man, a woman and a child were recovered, but their relationship still isn't clear.
Three people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, including the officer who carried out the rescue. There was no immediate word on their conditions.
No other injuries were reported, but nearly 60 people in other units were evacuated.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control after about two hours.
