(Reuters)-- Tuesday, American authorities announced the seizure of approximately seven tons (14,000 pounds) of marijuana on the Arizona-Mexico border.
U.S. officials say is the largest such seizure to take place in the Nogales, Arizona sector of the border. The seizure took place at the Mariposa-Nogales port of entry on January 15. The 600 packages of marijuana, each wrapped in plastic and weighing between 25 to 30 pounds were discovered inside a tractor-trailer attempting to cross the border.
Investigators estimate that the marijuana is worth an estimated $7 million dollars. A 26-year old Mexican male was taken into custody during the incident.
The Nogales-Mariposa port of entry is one of the busiest in the United States, and is considered a main point of entry for Mexican-grown agricultural products entering the country.
