Midland City, AL -- The hostage standoff in rural Alabama is now in its sixth day. Sunday, the town remembered the bus driver who was shot and killed.
66-year-old Charles Albert Poland Jr. was buried today. Police say Poland was shot and killed Tuesday while trying to protect his young passengers.
At the funeral Poland was remembered as a loving husband, father and "paw-paw," who would do anything for his grandchildren.
More details are emerging about the suspected gunman. Neighbors and officials describe 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes as isolated, with few friends and no close family.
Authorities say Dykes gunned down a school bus driver and then abducted a 5-year-old boy from the bus, taking him to an underground bunker on his property.
Dykes is a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, Dykes was arrested for improper exhibition of a weapon. That was in 1995, and it was later dismissed.
Neighbors describe Dykes as a man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property, and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm.
