Trenton, NJ -- Three New Jersey siblings are safe after police stormed their home and fatally shot their mother's boyfriend who had kept them captive for 37 hours.
The three were rescued early Sunday from the home that also contained the decomposing bodies of their mother and teenage brother.
Thirty-eight-year-old Gerald "Skip" Tyrone Murphy was shot to death during a confrontation with police. That culminated a standoff that started late Friday afternoon.
Authorities say the decision to enter the home was made because officials grew more concerned about Murphy's "deteriorating state of mind" and to help ensure the captives survived.
Murphy had kept them with him inside a roughly 10-foot-by-11-foot bedroom throughout the standoff.
Authorities say Murphy was a registered sex offender.
