A group of specialists in menopause says hormone replacement treatment could still be appropriate for some women.

The group's new recommendations come after a landmark federal study linked the treatment with higher rates of cancer and heart disease. The study's findings turned many women away from hormone treatment.

But the North American Menopause Society say supplements could be used for symptoms such as hot flashes. The group says doses should be lower than the standard treatment, and given only for the shortest possible time.

The society also says hormones should not be used to help prevent heart disease. It says alternative medications should be considered for prevention of osteoporosis.
