Modesto, CA-- Police are investigating an accidental shooting you would expect to see on television, but it allegedly happened in real life.
The hardest fact to believe is that according to the victim, the bullet was not fired from a gun. Police in Modesto told the Modesto Bee newspaper that weightlifter claims he accidentally shot himself by dropping a dumbbell on a bullet.
Officer Chris Adams said when police answered an emergency call they found the man with a gunshot wound in his shoulder.
The 56-year-old said he had dropped the weight on a rimfire .22-caliber bullet and claimed the impact activated its propellant powder.
Adams said the officers had doubts about the story, but that it was plausible. They didn't find a gun at the home, but they did locate a shell casing.
Adams said the case was closed as a suspicious circumstance investigation.
