Seoul, Korea-- Move over France, there is a new LEGO champion in the world.

Sunday, May 13 LEGO celebrated its 80th birthday. And as part of the celebration the world's tallest tower was announced.

The winner is...Seoul, Korea.

The previous world record holder was one built in France consisting of 31.6 meters.

How did they do it? With over 50,000 bricks, 4,000 contest winners spent five days building in an event that attracted more than 30,000 visitors. The build took place outside the Olympic City stadium in Seoul, South Korea. Sunday evening, the Crown Prince of Denmark placed the final, record-breaking brick on the tower that reached 31.9 meters.

LEGO has had a strong presence in Asia for decades and was the first branded toy in the Korean market.

Worldwide LEGO is still popular for schools, competitions and family fun. The company hopes to continue that tradition.
