WFMY News 2 -- Tuesday, the Hula Hoop turned 50! Wham-O receive the patent for Hula Hoops on March 5, 1963.

According to History.com, the Hula Hoop was founded by the creators of Wham-o when they saw a wooden hoop that Australian children twirled around their waists during gym class. The fun toy became a fad when more than 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in the first 4 months of production. 

In honor of the Hula Hoop, WFMY News 2's Frank Mickens, Tanya Rivera and Grant Gilmore took part in a Hula Hoop showdown.
