THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Police say a man has died after he was struck by an Amtrak train in Thomasville.
Thomasville police said they were called shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said that the Amtrack engineer saw Larry Barnes, 65, in the middle of the tracks and sounded the horn. When Barnes heard the horn, he tried to cross in front of the train.
Police found his body under the I-85 Business Loop Bridge near Randolph County.
Police Capt. Darren Smith said the train stopped about a quarter mile from where it hit the man. The train was estimated to be traveling 79 mph when it hit the victim.
