(CBS News) Sherman Hemsley, who played George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons," has died.

CBS affiliate KDBC confirmed Tuesday that the actor was found dead at his home in El Paso, Texas. He was 74.

Hemsley first played Jefferson on the CBS comedy "All in the Family" and later on its hit spin-off, "The Jeffersons." He also starred as Deacon Ernest Frye the TV series "Amen."

Sources told TMZ that Hemsley appeared to have died of natural causes. He had no wife or children.
