Winston-Salem, NC -- Police in Winston-Salem they have a growing problem with thieves stealing mopeds.
In the last month, 35 mopeds have been stolen throughout the city.
Police told News 2, mopeds don't have to be registered with the DMV to drive them on city streets, so they're easy targets for thieves.
So why are people stealing them?
According to police, hard times call for desperate measures.
"We don't have any information that would lead us to believe that they're being broken down and used for some other purpose. However, we do feel like the people that are utilizing them, or taking them, are using them to get from one place to another," said Lt. Natoshia James.
Police have recovered ten of the mopeds that were stolen.
Their advice to moped owners:
Lock them down, remove the keys, and be sure to write down the VIN numbers.
