Raleigh, NC -- A new version of North Carolina's Move Over Law will go into effect Monday, October 1st.

It will require motorists to change lanes or slow down to avoid roadside utility and maintenance crews bearing flashing amber lights.

The General Assembly voted in June 2012 to include them on the list that already includes emergency responders, law enforcement and tow trucks.

Violations come with a stiff penalty: a $250 fine plus $188 in court costs.

Drivers are specifically instructed to move over at least one lane when two or more lanes are available in each direction.  Otherwise they must slow down and be prepared to stop.

47 other states have enacted similar statutes.
