GREENSBORO -- A man was caught by a surveillance camera walking past a campaign sign on the ground, then stepping on it. Was this legal?
WFMY News 2 talked with attorneys and law enforcement about the man's actions to see if he broke any laws.
Two laws deal with this. First, it's a criminal offense to deface and vandalize a political sign that was placed in the right of way. It's a misdemeanor. Second, the wantonly and willfully injuring of personal property of another is a misdemeanor.
In this instance caught on camera, the law doesn't apply because the sign was in a parking lot. For the second law, an Elon law professor, Greensboro Police, and Guilford County Sheriff's Department did not see anything they thought was 100% against the law.
