OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine-- Roughly four hundred people braved near-freezing temperatures and the frigid waters of the Atlantic to ring in the New Year by plunging into the ocean and raise money for the Special Olympics Maine at the 25th annual Lobster Dip.
Three hundred eighty-eight dippers lined up on the sands of Old Orchard Beach at noon before braving the surf. Many wore costumes, while others wore barely anything at all as they dove into the forty-five degree ocean on a day when the temperature struggled to climb above freezing.
In all, the dippers helped raise more than $108,000 dollars for young athletes with developmental disabilities.
About 400 people jumped into the frigid Atlantic Ocean on New Year's Day for the 25th annual Lobster Dip in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
