Lafayette, IN-- Many questions remain following the deaths of two men, a case that began Thursday night with a shooting outside a Lafayette restaurant, followed by an exchange of gunfire with police and a pickup truck crashing into an occupied house near Walmart off Indiana 26 East.

The Lafayette Police Department suspects that one of the men, 62-year-old Joel Ray Hershman of Brook, was held against his will in the pickup truck by 46-year-old Steven Keith Moseley, who was described as homeless and recently staying in the Lafayette area.

Moseley was behind the wheel of the silver Dodge pickup truck, and Hershman was in the passenger seat, Deputy Chief Dave Payne confirmed.

But how the men knew each other, if at all, remains unknown.

Hershman was a Newton County businessman whose family owns Hershman True Value Hardware & Appliance in Brook. He was featured in the Journal & Courier in September 2001, the same year the hardware store celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Dual criminal and internal investigations are under way. The investigations are expected to take place throughout the weekend, Payne said.

Meanwhile, Officer Donna Gregorash, a Lafayette police officer for three years who shot at Moseley and the pickup truck, has been placed on administrative leave - standard practice following any police-action shooting - pending an internal investigation and shooting review board.

The incident began at 11:18 p.m. Thursday, when someone reported a single gunshot had been fired inside a vehicle - described as a silver Dodge pickup truck - parked outside the IHOP restaurant at 4215 Indiana 26 East.

The pickup truck was gone when officers arrived, but blood was found on the pavement, Lt. Brad Hayworth said.

Police found the truck within five to 10 minutes behind a nearby hair salon at 750 Park East Boulevard, according to information from Hayworth and Payne.
