Undated -- NASA is tracking a cosmic threat. A 150 foot wide asteroid is expected to come within 17,000 miles of earth on February 15. That's the closest call with an asteroid this big that the earth has ever seen.

Believe it or not, there are thousands of other asteroids out there and astronomers are watching for the the threat of a real life collision.

UNC Greensboro Astronomy professor Dr. Anatoly Miroshnichenko said, "We need some time to get ready for that, perhaps we will send a robot to collide and change it's trajectory so that the collision is avoided."

There are precisely 9,672 near-earth objects, comets or asteroids, that come near earth all the time. Around 1,300 of those are classified as potentially hazardous and could hit earth.

Nasa is certain this asteroid will not make impact.
