How would you like to get paid to lose weight? Sounds pretty good, and even better, it's backed by research.
According to a Mayo Clinic study, people who get a financial incentive are more likely not only to lose weight but stick with a weight loss program. The study also revealed those who got paid to shed the pounds lost more weight compared to those who got no incentive.
They all had a common goal of losing four pounds per month up to their goal weight. They weighed in once monthly for a year. Those who met their goals got $20 per month. But those who didn't make it had to pay up, $20 each month into a bonus pool. Plus they all had a chance to win the pool by a lottery. Researchers also discovered those who had to pay were more likely to stick with it compared to those who got no incentive.
One program that helps people lose weight based on a financial incentive is called, HealthyWage. So far, more than 100,000 people and more than 500 companies and organizations have participated in its wellness programs.
Plus there are plenty of apps out there like GymPact for the iPhone that offers cash incentives for you to lose weight. But you have to pay a set amount of money if you miss your appointment to the gym.
Make sure you always do your homework and talk with a doctor before going on a weight loss program.
