Clemmons, NC - Mother's Day is no time to relax for local moms grappling with tornado aftermath. One Clemmons family turned their misfortune into a working holiday.

"It's none of our normal mother's day," said Eveline Smart. But it is a celebration of sorts... one where you bring your own chainsaw.

"I got a brother in law that drove down, got here last night, three in the morning with his chainsaw," says Jim Smart, Eveline's husband.

From as far away as New York - moms, dads, and other relatives came to spend their holiday helping the Smarts salvage valuables, cut down trees, and drag debris to the road.

"It just shows you how valuable your friends and family are because they gave up their mother's day to help me on my mother's day," says Eveline.

The progress from fifteen pairs of hands is clear. "You couldn't even see this yard two days ago. And we just worked from morning... til six, seven o'clock and got it all cleared out," says Jim.

"It's a celebration 'cause your friends are here and they're helping you in that way but it's not like party time, you know? Except for when the guys are choppin' down the tree and yellin' and having a good old time back there," Eveline points out.

And there's no denying the good old time to be had. "We have a good time, you know you gotta make the best of things, and I think we're doing that," says Jim.

It's a mother's day this family won't forget, but a holiday they'd rather delay. "We'll just postpone mother's day, maybe next week we'll celebrate it," says Jim.

Greensboro, NC -- The strong system moving into the Piedmont on Sunday has arrived. Severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were issued for multiple counties. A tornado warning was issued for Pittsylvania County in Virginia, as well as Stanly and Montgomery Counties in North Carolina during the afternoon and evening. Those warnings were allowed to expire. There have been no verifications of tornadoes in those counties.

Hail has been reported with the storm cell that moved through Stanly and Montgomery Counties. The same storm also produced funnel clouds and a possible tornado in Lincoln County, NC.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Guilford, Forsyth, Randolph, Alamance, Montgomery and Davidson County in North Carolina until 11PM.

Meteorologist Leigh Brock and Robb Ellis have been monitoring the storms all weekend. "It doesn't look as bad as Thursday. People are still on edge after that round of tornadoes," says Leigh Brock. Ellis urges people to keep an eye on the weather. "It's a holiday weekend and things can always change quickly. With any severe weather event people should monitor the weather very closely."
Clemmons, NC -- "It was moments. It was moments. It didn't last a minute. It didn't last a minute," said Amber Parker. "It was just that fast." In a matter of seconds, a tornado ripped through amber parker's home. "There was absolute silence," said Parker. "And then my ears started popping. I never heard the 'train.' I never heard the wind pick up. My ears just started popping and I heard the roof going." Parker didn't have much time to react before her home collapsed around her and her two boys. "I grabbed the baby and the 3-year-old and ran as fast as I could. We just got inside the doorframe when I was pushed to the side. Everything went. Everything went. But the good thing is, my kids came out without a scratch hardly on them. We're blessed. We've lost everything, but we are blessed. We have our family." Parker's story is one of dozens in her Clemmons neighborhood. Winds blew roofs, shingles and siding off more than 30 houses in and around Frye Bridge Estates. "It was the typical roar that you hear, and then my ears. The pressure. I mean, it just felt like they were about to explode," said Chris Ellis, Parker's next-door neighbor. Ellis watched items fly past his window. "I said, 'Oh my god, the Bradford Pear is getting ready to snap.' And I watched it, it bent over, and no sooner than five seconds, it snapped and it hurled through the air like a Frisbee," said Ellis, who is a high school senior at West Forsyth High School. Minus a roof, the Ellis home is still standing. As for Parker, she is grateful her neighbors pulled her to safety.

"They dug us out. They are absolute heroes," she said. "The terrible things can happen, but when you have wonderful people in your community that are willing to put themselves out to help others, you know, you can't ask for more than that." Now, she and her family must focus on cleaning up and carrying on. "We'll just take it day by day and see where it goes," Parker said. Parker's husband David was out-of-town when the storm blew through. He met his wife at a local hospital, where she was treated for minor cuts and bruises. Their two children, Avery, who will be 2 years old next week, and 3-year-old Will, are doing fine. If you would like to help the Parker family or others affected by Thursday's tornadoes, you can call the American Red Cross in Winston-Salem at (336) 724-0511.

Greensboro, NC -- Emergency officials say the heaviest damage in Guilford County was in the area around the Piedmont Triad International Airport.

One person was killed as the storms rolled through Thursday night. Authorities identified him Friday afternoon as 51-year-old Donald Ray Needham of Jackson Springs. Authorities say he was making a delivery to I.H. Caffey company and pulled over due to the bad weather. Investigators say he died when winds flipped over his truck.

Police blocked off an area around NC 68 and Market Street to keep people out of the areas with the worst damage.

Beginning at 11: 30 a.m., business and property owners were allowed to return to the area. They were required to check in with security at Triad Center Road at Thatcher Road and to get escorted into the area to inspect for tornado damage. Officers took one person per business to their location and allowed them to stay for one hour. A business identification card was necessary to enter the secured area. Emergency managers emphasized that any business and property owners should check their structure for damage. If the believe there is a problem that need to call 708-5037. Authorities from the city of Greensboro, Guilford County and Duke Energy held a news briefing at 11: 00 a.m. They said travel is still not safe in the area of Little Santee Road, Triad Drive, Capital Drive and Standard Drive. Power is out and security checkpoints are in place.

Assistant Fire Chief David Douglas said that roughly 25 percent of the buildings in the affected area sustained moderate to severe damage. Crews conducting the assessments found no victims. The area will remain closed to the general public at least through the remainder of the day Friday.

Clemmons, NC -- Some area families are taking shelter away from home Saturday night after hours of endless Tornado cleanup. Sheriff's deputies continue guarding the damaged neighborhoods, and expect to stay there through Sunday.

The night is welcome relief for neighbors who spent much of the daylight hours clearing debris and trying to salvage what's left.

"It's a slab and a bunch of sticks. I guess that's all a house is without the family in it," says Amber Parker.

It's hard to recognize the bunch of sticks was once the Parker family's two-story house. Some of it even blew across the road.

Amber Parker is still rescuing memories from the rubble, like her son's fishing rod.

"Still works, so him and his daddy can go fishing. It's amazing," she says. Other neighbors are amazed the Parkers got out alive. "We thought we were in bad shape, but when you look at their house, they pretty much lost everything," says Mark Caudle, who lives across the street. Caudle won't wait out another tornado warning in his house. "If we can get out of our house and go to a shelter or something, we'd rather do that than be here," says Caudle.

When Parker rebuilds, she'll have a steel safe room installed. But for now, there's still plenty of cleanup duty, and people to help.

"This is just a big mess. But it shows you the true character of people it shows you the will of God and it shows you that miracles happen around you every day," says Parker.

District Attorney Garry Frank said he sent the request to Superior Court Judge Mark E. Klass, who had not signed the order as of Friday afternoon, according to office staff. Aubrey Roy Roseberry, 58, was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies Wednesday night after taking three people hostage at a home near Lexington, authorities said. The man who escaped and the three hostages each were shot during the ordeal. Roseberry released the girl and woman after about three hours of negotiating, and he was shot as he tried to escape.
