Chicago, IL -- Brian McGuiness, the Games' executive director, says registration rates are ahead of expectations. He hopes to exceed organizers' forecast of 12,000 athletes and artists.
Organizers say the last Gay Games had 11,000 participants. Those were held in Sydney in 2002.
Some if this year's sports, such as sailing, already are closed for registration because they have reached capacity.
The Gay Games are scheduled for July 15th through July 22nd.
