New York, NY (Sports Network) - Cashmere Wright led a balanced Cincinnati
attack with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, as the Bearcats rolled
over St. John's, 76-54, at Madison Square Garden.
Yancy Gates and Sean Kilpatrick each scored 14, and both combined for 17 of
Cincinnati's 49 rebounds. Dion Dixon scored 10 for the Bearcats (17-7, 7-4 Big
East), who have won back-to-back contests after losing three in a row.
D'Angelo Harrison had 15 points and Phil Greene scored eight for the Red Storm
(10-14, 4-8), which has dropped two in a row following a February 1 win at
DePaul.
A basket by Gates capped an 8-0 run, giving Cincinnati a 23-15 lead with 5:48
left in the opening half. It was 30-19 at the half thanks to Cincy's
spectacular defense. The Red Storm went 9-of-32 from the field in the opening
20 minutes.
Cincinnati then made 19-of-33 shots in the final half. The Bearcats were never
threatened in the final 20 minutes and led by double digits nearly the entire
second stanza.
The Bearcats held a 40-18 advantage in points in the paint and also won the
rebounding margin by 20. St. John's shot just 32.8 percent in the game.
Making news prior to the game on Wednesday was the announcement from St.
John's that junior guard Malik Stith was leaving the program for personal
reasons, that according to head coach Steve Lavin.
