Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Alex Abreu scored 15 points as the Akron Zips
edged the Western Michigan Broncos 69-66 in overtime in Mid-American
Conference action at University Arena.
Zeke Marshall scored 14 points for the Zips (17-7, 9-1 MAC), who have won
seven straight and 11 of their last 12. The win kept Akron alone in first
place in the MAC's East Division. Brian Walsh added 12 points and seven
rebounds. Quincy Diggs provided 10 points.
Mike Douglas scored 15 points and dealt out eight assists for the Broncos
(10-14, 4-6), which has lost three straight and four of their last five.
Flenard Whitfield added 12 points. Shayne Whittington grabbed eight rebounds.
Western Michigan led 31-22 at halftime after going 12-of-27 from the floor.
The hosts led 58-53 with 2:32 left in regulation before the Zips rallied to
force overtime with the game tied at 59. Whitfield hit one of two foul shots
with six seconds left to force the extra period. Diggs missed a three-pointer
at the buzzer that would have won it for the Zips.
Marshall hit two foul shots with 37 seconds left in overtime to put the Zips
in front. Diggs added another free throw with two seconds left and Eastern
Michigan never got off a final shot.
Akron scored 24 points off its bench.
