University Park, PA (Sports Network) - D.J. Newbill posted a double-double,
with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Penn State Nittany Lions over the
Duquesne Dukes, 84-74, at Bryce Jordan Center in a non-conference battle.
Nick Colella added 15 points and Sasa Borovnjak chipped in with 14 points for
the Nittany Lions (8-4).
The Dukes (7-7) were led by Sean Johnson with 19 points, while Quevyn Winters
finished with 14 points and Derrick Colter tallied 13 points.
Penn State shot just 40.6 percent from the field to open the game, but did
knock down 6-of-13 from beyond the 3-point arc, as the Nittany Lions took a
39-28 advantage into the break. Duquesne was held to just 39.3 percent
shooting and only 4-of-12 on its 3-point attempts.
Halftime did not help the Dukes shooting, as they made just 35.5 percent of
their field goal attempts in the second half, including just 5-of-19 from
beyond the arc. The Nittany Lions shot a little better at 44.4 percent from
the field but were outscored 15-6 from the 3-point line, as the Dukes
attempted a comeback. After trailing by double digits for most of the half,
Duquesne cut their deficit to just five, 79-74, with under a minute to play,
but would get no closer as the Nittany Lions held on to win their fourth-
straight contest.
The Nittany Lions dominated in the paint, outscoring the Dukes 28-16. After
combining for just nine made free-throws in the first half, both squads
sank 19 free-throws each in the second half.
